The steady evolution of squid in this period gave Cryptoclidus a valuable food supply, its pointed teeth perfect for "filter-feeding" on small squid and fish. Cryptoclidus supplemented its diet with fish, enabling this plesiosaur to grow up to 8 metres long and 8 tonnes in weight.
